NPSG Addressed: Prevent surgical mistakes UP.01.03.01.
Preventing errors during surgery requires an appropriate change in nursing practices and health facilities. The increased rate of changes in the healthcare system provides an opportunity to advance and refine the operations leading to reduced surgical mistakes. The change initiative is preventing errors during surgery by making various reformations in the health systems, for instance, installing reminders in the surgery rooms to provide alerts during operation processes and making the health professionals providing the necessary precautions that are necessary for surgical procedures to avoid occurrences of mistakes. Since our NPSG is preventing surgical errors, the emphasis is on the operations and the requirements that help to facilities operational activities. The goal is to curb surgical mistakes in health facilities and to enhance patient safety. Objectives include enlightening healthcare workers on the necessary precautions to avoid surgical errors during operations and to improve the health outcome of patients through appropriate actions. Besides, the effectiveness of surgical equipment is core in eliminating surgical mistakes. The change theory is the innovation diffusion theory (Udod & Wagner, 2018). The first step of the model is getting knowledge of the initiative. Secondly, persuading the involved stakeholders on the strategy to win their support. The next step is the decision of the health professionals to approve and accept the proposed change. Implementation is the next step, where the proposed amendment is initiated. For instance, the reminders are installed, and nurses start engaging in the strategy. Confirmation and evaluation are then done to check the progress of the initiative in preventing surgical mistakes. Surgical mistakes would be minimized by 50% after five months of implementation of the change initiative (Marquis & Huston, 2009). The rationale of the project is to determine the best practices that would help to bolt surgical errors that are prevalent in our health facilities.
