Discussion Board: Week 7
In the debate about immunization on children, I would conclude compulsory vaccination for all children with religious exceptions. Listening to those opposing compulsory exceptions, they cite very few cases of adverse outcomes and vaccine ineffectiveness. However, the vaccine can protect a large number of people, the whole state, from infection outbreak, save healthcare costs and client burden and, the economy. Vaccination is for pubic good and not individual benefit. I, therefore, side with the community to have vaccination become compulsory and reduce the risk to community health.
To evaluate support for compulsory, I would consider two steps, which include evaluation for omitted information and incomplete reasoning. Identification of omitted information helps to overcome the temptation of following the purpose of those arguing and become objective(Browne & Keeley, 2012).I would, for example, evaluate details about the number of children who experienced adverse effects of the vaccines versus those who did not. Incomplete reasoning, on the other hand, occurs due to limited specie or lack of enough information (Browne & Keeley, 2012). I would evaluate the evidence of those supporting the vaccine to find out whether the evidencesupports their argument and immunization.
Dichotomous thinkingis the orientation to think that something is either positive or negative and no possibilities of anything in between. Such thinking affects the conclusion because it prevents people from exploring all information about the object. As a result, they are likely to make inaccurate conclusions because they did not assess the possibilities of other causes and effects. Dichotomous thinking also leads to incomplete reasoning. People taking the approach do not depend on facts, knowledge, or detailed information to make arguments. They depend on their initial belief or knowledge, which does not provide sufficient reasoningcreating possibilities of inaccurate conclusions.
