Survey Reflections
From the survey above, there is one general trend that manifests itself. That is apparent fear of the imminent spread of coronavirus to the United States. All the five interviewees express fear and wish their government would do something out of the normal just to keep the deadly diseases away from their country. From a perspective of disaster preparedness, there is a lot that needs to be done as far as preparing the citizenry to manage emergencies at their local communities is concerned. One prominent inference that would be drawn from the data is that many Americans believe that it is the responsibility of the government to manage disasters of whatever nature. In the survey, four out of five responses stated that the government needs to warn of imminent disasters, fight them when they actually take place, feed the victims who been evacuated to safety and finally compensate those who extremely suffered.
In all fairness, it is not wrong if the government assumes the biggest responsibility as far as disaster management is concerned. However,Barfield, Krug, & COUNCIL, (2017) indicates that working with a citizenry that is enlightened disaster preparedness and actual management produces outcomes that are less extreme in terms of death cases and property destruction. In general sense, it is high time communities are organized into serious conversations bordering disaster preparedness and management. The bigger picture here is to equip every citizen with the knowledge on what to among their resources can be set aside and to what quantities they can do so. Finally, the survey also pants a glimpse picture of what lies ahead even as the world is jostling with the highly contagious COVID-19(the Corona Virus).
