how the child has been made to realize racism and prejudice in America

To Kill A Mockingbird is a novel written by Harper Lee and later translated into other languages. The book was published in 1960 and since then has sold more than 30 million copies globally. The author was trying to bring out how the child has been made to realize racism and prejudice in America, specifically in the south. The setting of the book takes place in a small town named Maycomb, Alabama, during a period when there was a great depression. The protagonist in the novel is Jean Louise, who is referred to as Scout. The author has described the protagonist as an intelligent girl who grows from six to nine years old during the novel. Scout has been raised with her brother Jeremy Atticus who is referred to as Jem in the book. The two children are growing up with their father, who is a widow named Atticus Finch. Atticus Finch is a lawyer by profession and raises his children well by encouraging them to be just and have empathy for others. The children grow up knowing that killing a Mockingbird is a sin since birds are harmless creatures.

One of the town’s black residents is falsely accused of raping Mayella Ewell, who is a white woman. Atticus accepts the request to be his lawyer even though the society was against the alleged rapist. At some point, Atticus experiences a mob that was ready to attack his client, but he stood by him. Scout tries to understand what made her father act as he did, and she realizes that justice was vital in every society. Scout learned that the community was faced with a lot of injustices, which not all people could see. Many people in the organization found it useful to support prejudices rather than finding the truth and standing by justice (Focca 2). Atticus defends Mayella by stating that her father, Bob Ewell, attacked him. According to the author, leaving the rapist to die would be like shooting a mocking bird.

The children get interested in Arthur, known as “Boo” in the novel, which is a neighbor and a legend. The two children have their views about the neighbor and cannot resist trespassing to Boo’s property (“SparkNotes: To Kill a Mockingbird: Video Summary”). Atticus finds out that the children were stocking Boo and warns them to be more sensitive to their attitude towards their elders. Boo is seen to interfere when Bob Ewell attacks Jem and Scout and kills him. Boo is trying to be a much silent member of society, and the author has brought out Boo’s character to be quiet. Boo is always minding his own business but interferes when necessary. Other people believe that Ewell died on a knife accident; hence Boo is left free from all dramas.

Justice has not been done on Ewell’s death; hence people do not know the real cause of death. Boo continues with his life as usual, even without the single guilt of having killed someone. I believe there would have been a better way to solve the issue when Ewell attacks the children instead of killing him; hence justice is not implemented. It is foolish how even the Sherriff believes that Ewell died on a knife accident instead of investigating the real cause of the death (Focca 6). The sheriff goes ahead to say that it is right the death occurred, which is so inhuman to mention. The children agree with the plan of keeping a secret since all they knew was that by telling the truth, they would be shooting the mocking bird.

Atticus defended the rapist, who did not require justice. Black Americans were discriminated against due to the basis of color; hence Atticus did not succeed in his doing good. The trial did not have judgment; therefore, Atticus was punished by having his children punished. The children went to spy on Boo since they thought he was acting weirdly, according to them. Atticus had taught his children on being racists and stereotypes at the expense of justice. The children had grown up believing that all evils were not to be covered up. The children did not understand the sentence well since Atticus had not been a good teacher to them. The author of To Kill a Mockingbird used the title to mean that a lot of people covered up for the evils happening to avoid hurting other people who they thought are useful to them. To kill a mockingbird has been used to mean killing innocent people. Atticus is a good man who is honest and pure of heart but is surrounded by people who do not care about justice. However, Atticus believes that one-day, evil will end in the world, and goodness will overshadow all evil deeds.

To Kill A Mockingbird is a young girl’s story becoming of age and all the dramas about the consequences of racism together with their roots. The young girl gets to understand how the community consists of both the good and evil people (Focca 7). Scout gets to learn than not all people have good deeds in society; hence people pretend to have good intentions but end up doing evil in private. Scout has grown up to realize that she should resist abusing other people or having negativity towards others. Scout has learned that in case she gets in a situation where negativity comes her way, she should persevere since violence is built from negativity. There was a plot of To Kill A Mockingbird, which was inspired by unsuccessful youths who were two American men convicted of murder.

Charles Baker referred to as “Dill” in the novel, has been based on Truman Capote. Dill has been Lee’s friend since childhood and, more so, a next-door neighbor in Alabama (GradeSaver). After To Kill a Mocking bird was published, some people suspected that Capote was the author of Lee’s work until 2006 when a letter written by Capote to his aunt was found. The message was written in 1959, stating that Lee was the real author of the novel.

Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout learns many lessons from her father and all adults around her. In the process, Scout gets to lose her innocence in varying degrees due to different situations. Scout has been brought up by a single father; hence she looks up to him in anything as a role model. Early in the novel, the theme of education is shown when Scout learns a lot from her teacher Miss Caroline who makes her learn how adult life works (“SparkNotes: To Kill a Mockingbird: Video Summary”). Boo also plays a massive role in helping Scout get morals and lessons throughout the novel. When Scout joins the school, she is so much eager to learn; hence Miss Caroline decides to concentrate on her. Miss Caroline calls Scout to read an alphabet written on the board, and Scout already knew the alphabet. The teacher gets disappointed to find that Scout already knew to read and asks her to avoid learning from her father since it was not healthy. Miss Caroline hates the fact that Scout is challenging her abilities and feels threatened. Scout gets confused since she cannot understand how excelling in something did not excite the teacher (Wilber). Scout gets to realize that some adults think that their decisions or actions are accurate and that nobody should go against them. Scout ends up losing her innocence by judging the teacher, though correctly.

Atticus tries teaching his children about justice since the world seems unfair. Other people in society had a negative attitude towards African Americans, but Atticus taught his children to treat everybody with respect. Scout ends up relating well with an African American housekeeper and sees her as a mother. The whole city wanted the black man killed for having committed rape, but Atticus chose to stand with justice. Sadly, the court still found him guilty, making Scout see how life outside was unfair and innocent people lost. Scout is a curious girl and ends up discovering the nature of Boo. Throughout the novel, Scout and Jem thought of Boo as a scary human since they had never seen him. Scout and Jem end up knowing Boo when he saves their lives. The children learn that it is Boo who had been leaving them gifts under a tree. The only person Scout and Jem thought was evil turned out to be excellent and trustworthy. The children found out that it is not good to judge people by how they look. The author brings out the theme of law where Bob is taken before trial and convicted guilty.

The main character in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird is Scout Finch. The book begins when Scout is a young girl, but as events of the book continue, Scout is older and looks back to what happened when she was young. Jen is Scout’s older brother and is essential in some events of the novel. Atticus is a lawyer and a father to Scout and Jem and has raised them to be responsible human beings. Tom Robinsons is an African American who is accused of raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell. It becomes clear that Bob Ewell was guilty of committing the crime, but Tom is found guilty since he is black. Atticus tries to defend Tom and agrees to help prove his innocence even after the whole city believes that he is wrong. Harper Lee tries to explain the theme of racism by how Tom his judged for being black. The author explores the idea of courage by how Tom does not give up on fighting for justice, although everyone is against him. Atticus is also courageous by accepting the big challenge of supporting Tom and believing that they can prove justice on Tom.

In conclusion, Harper Lee was trying to bring out a lot of things through the novel. Harper Lee is trying to explore human morality by showing the goodness and evil of some characters. Atticus believes that all people have aspects of being kind and wrong, but darkness should not overcome the good in a person. Atticus is a teacher to many; he teaches his children always to do right and explains the whole community when he stands to defend an innocent black American. The author brings out Maycomb town as one that is full of racists. Throughout the novel, Scout and Jem are seen to have matured and understood what the community consisted of and the types of people living with them. The children get mad when Judge convicts an innocent soul. Scout and Jem receive airguns during Christmas, but Atticus warns them against shooting mockingbirds. Atticus explains that it is a sin to kill mockingbirds since they never harm anyone. The mockingbird in the novel has been used to represent pure and innocent people. Tom Robinson is an example of a mockingbird since a white lady accuses him of rape, which he did not commit. The town finds Tom guilty and sentences him to death hence killing a mockingbird. Boo is another example of a mockingbird since he spent almost the whole of his life at home since his father was used to punishing him in his childhood. However, Boo spends his life watching other people do things but saves Jem and Scout when Bob Owell attacks them. The sheriff makes Scout understand that a little lie to protect the innocent is required hence did not convict Boo for killing Ewell. The sheriff explains that convicting Bob would be shooting a mockingbird.
