Background

I am currently studying at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, for a bachelor’s degree.I have intermediate English ability and want to break through the bottleneck to learn slang. I am a graduate of Bronte College, Toronto, Canada.

I want to be able to enhance my ability to communicate in essay writing. Back in high school, I believed writing an essay was a means teacher used to ban student’s creativity. An essay is a short type of writing used to talk about a specific topic. There are three types of an essay; that is narrative, argumentative, and comparative essays. Similarities about these types of essays are that they have an introduction, the body, and a conclusion.

The introduction serves as a road map of an entire essay. In most cases, it is short and prices, because the main point is to draw the attention of the reader. The introduction has three parts, which include a hook, background information, and a thesis. The hook is where the writer wants to show why the reader should continue reading an essay. Mostly hook uses questions, quotations, facts, and visual images to capture the attention. The background information a writer talks about the subject concisely(García et al., 2019). Here the purpose is to show why the topic is essential. Thirdly on introduction is about the thesis; it is the backbone of an essay, and the writer is expected to be clear, and specific.it comes at the end of the introduction paragraph because the body is dependable to the thesis.

The body is where the primary information is presented. Each point in a body has its paragraph. It also has several parts which are, topic sentence, supporting details, and transitions. Topic sentences make the reader know what is in the paragraph. The point here is stated precisely on what the section contains. The supporting details always refer to the topic sentence. Several ways to write to have supporting information are through examples, facts, and figures. Here the reader expects illustrative stories, testimonies, and personal experience. Thirdly, transitions are a writer’s chance to use connecting words or phrases used to guide the reader from one idea to another(Heritage et al., 2020). Here ideas are connected in a chronological sequence. Transition words also join examples and moving from one step to another.

The conclusion restates the main statement in an essay. The writer summarizes a paper by driving the main point home. It reminds the reader of the strength of an argument in an essay. Here the thesis of the essay is revisited though using different words. A writer also can have his say by giving out an opinion or a recommendation about the topic. It should be understood that a conclusion is not a point of presenting new ideas. A good writer can leave his reader with something to think about. Most conclusions are the opposite of an introduction because the conclusion begins with specific and move to general ideas.The writing of a good introduction, body, and conclusion is a goal that every writer should desire to have, but through putting in some effort. Learning to write about those three structures of an essay will equip the writer with excellent skills in essay writing. A writer who often follows the structures of a body is said to solve about 80 percent of writing errors(Verplaetse et al., 2017). Writing an excellent essay may not be an easy thing to accomplish, but something worth doing is not simple.

I aim to improve my English written skills. I understand that essay writing is a special style that anyone can learn once they understand the writer’s basic skills. For instance, a comprehensive English essay should offer a debatable, solid thesis that is well supported by evidential analysis. There is a standardized set of guidelines that should be followed in writing an effective essay.

Therefore, I will follow the following goals to ensure I can write an effective essay that adheres to the rules of the English language. Outline – before writing any form of an essay, I will be structuring a brief overview. A framework will guide my writing process and thus be able to understand what to say. I am aware that making a basic outline is an effective way of narrowing down my essay thesis and creating a proper argument(Verplaetse et al., 2017). To better my essay, I will be using the following elements: introduction, thesis statement, body, and conclusion.

Goals

I aim to improve my spoken English language skills. Below are my goals:

Slang – I will use many slangs as possible in order to enrich my English vocabulary. I will be learning new words every day. I will become familiar with such words as ‘knackered,’ ‘chuffed,’ and ‘bank,’ ‘cheeky’ and ‘bum.’

Improve my writing skills – I would like to become familiar with effective essay writing skills to improve my writing abilities. For this reason, I will be writing two essays per day and have them marked by my English instructor.

Excel in English as a subject – I am determined to sharpen my English skills because I aspire to be the best performer in the subject in my class. English is my favorite subject, and I would do anything to become expertise in it(Verplaetse et al., 2017).

SMART goals

Specific – I would concentrate on learning how to writing effective essays and familiarizing myself with slangs

Measurable –become a better and accomplished English speaker

Attainable – I would be attending writing courses and workshops. I will also be studying textbooks and reading thriller novels, which are written by English native speakers. I will also try and write my own story. Additionally, I will consider joining a critique group.

Relevant – I will be devoting 20 percent of my writing time to reading novels and reviewing written essays. I will spend the other 70 percent in writing my essays and stories. I will be walking at 5 am every morning to write my essays. I will also take a writing class to help me achieve my long-term goals.

Time-bound – I will set a specific timeline for the completion of my essays. For instance, I will be writing an essay of 1000 words in two hours. Additionally, I will set two hours every day, reading various novels and reviewing essays.

METHOD

  1. Read relevant references – peer-reviewed articles and journals will be of help to me in understanding how the expertise of linguists and the English language says about the subject.
  2. Defining my target performance in terms of explicit and implicit knowledge – I would like to learn English slangs, useful vocabulary, rules of writing an effective essay, and how to effective communication in written English.
  3. I will focus on one specific skill and use some other skills as a means. I will mainly focus on improving my written skills. I aim to boost my writing creativity and analytical skills. For this reason, I will spend most of my time reading novels, short stories, and reviewing peer-reviewed journals.
  4. Include authentic contexts – I will join a study group comprised of people who are well-versed in both spoken and written language.
  5. I will make a small investment in time for practice daily. I will invest for one hour every to study and write essays. I will be writing my essays every day, but after lunch.
  6. I will invite a friend to give their feedback on my learning progress. Receiving critical feedback from my friend would help me to improve and better my skills.
  7. The quantitative and qualitative data to use – I will use a vocabulary test, the number of newly learned words, and several read journals.
  8. I will motivate myself my rewarding myself with a nice dessert. However, I will only be rewarding myself if I am positively progressing in my activities.

  1. I will invest a great amount of time reading references and finding our information about potential resources and tools I can use to better my English language. For instance, I will be visiting the Quizlet to learn new words. Additionally, I will be reading the New Oxford Dictionary to familiarize myself with rich English vocabulary.
  2. Trying out different apps – sites such as Blinkist, Quizlet, and Siri will be helpful to me in enriching my writing skills. I will also be posting a question in Quizlet to receive feedback from the English experts and professors.
  3. Choosing something relevant – I will only concentrate on studying such information that helps improve my specific area of writing skills. For instance, I will be accessing the ‘English StackOverFlow’ website to learn the better means of constructing grammatically correct sentences.
  4. Authentic texts – I will only be reading peer-reviewed articles and journals

PROGRESS MEASUREMENT

To effectively measure my progress, I will collect two types of data: quantitative and qualitative

Quantitative data – I will involve in quantifying the learned vocabulary test results before the completion of the project. I will also keep a record of the learned new words. All the words collected from the Quizlet will be properly recorded and kept as a journal. All the grammatical and typo errors I make in my writing will be quantified.

Qualitative data – I will take into account the feedbacks from my critics and friends. I will try to improve my spoken English.

TIMELINE

Week One: Study a Thriller Novel

Week Two: write my own stories – four hours a day

Week Three: Review the story – one hour a day

Week Four: visit different English language websites to learn new words – three hours a day

Week Five: Review journals and articles – two hours a day

DAILY SCHEDULE

I will try and write an essay every day particularly during the evening hours.

Successful completion of my English project will be of great help to me in enriching my vocabulary and improving my writing skills. For instance, I will be in position to write sound and outstanding essays and stories. I will, therefore, make a good English speaker.
