The story by Amy Tan is a reflection of the life endured by a Chinese lady who lost everything and considered migrating to the US in the company of her daughter Jing-Mei. The author makes a further illustration of the scenarios in which individuals with the same identity as he imagined a potential future and how the American dream changed their characters.
Mrs. Woo left for America with the utmost hope that there will be more significant opportunities for the two of them. She undergoes imaginations of a lifestyle that June would embrace and realizes that it wouldn’t bring complete satisfaction in most fortunate circumstances. Everyone’s vision of America is of a luxurious life full of opportunities and possibilities of wealth and security. Jing then makes a reflection of whatever her mother viewed, “she believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America…you could open a restaurant. You could work for the government and get a good retirement. You could buy a house with almost no money down. You could become rich” (Tan, 590). However, the mother portrays that she could be anything to go by, although her inner sense thinks of wealth and career. But Woo’s family has a mindset of the things they feel would make life worthwhile; however, that feeling disconnects from the reality that will fulfill their ambitions. In this context, the dream people have concerning America is enough evidence to entice those with nothing and will leave them disconnected.
Jing’s mother’s mind was fully occupied with the American dream notion to be the breakthrough that will bring a better life to her. Therefore she neglected to take her through basic lessons that there is value in a successful life than wealth and honourable professionalism. Tan illustrates this from the context of a daily ritual where he mentions that “one night, I had to look at a page from the Bible for three minutes and then report back everything I could remember. ‘Now Jehoshaphat had riches and honor in abundance and… that’s all I can remember, Ma,’ I said” (Tan 591). From this extract, she only imagines of riches, honor, and abundance. According to the Bible’s teachings, morality, ethics, and love are prioritized; however, she is overwhelmed with the dream of the American Culture thus couldn’t realize the importance of the Biblical teachings together with those teachings from her mother. From the little that the mother had, she was willing to sacrifice it all so that her daughter finds a way out to success. Jing never realized all the sacrifices from her mother; instead, she became hangry with her and never appreciated her efforts. From her mother’s action, she speaks out her mind. “‘ so ungrateful,’ I heard her mutter in Chinese, ‘if Jing had as much talent as Mei has a temper, she’d be famous now'” (Tan 593). However, she doesn’t show any disappointments the ingratitude from her Jing, who did not appreciate her efforts through sacrifice. The believes that Jing was not yet a genius. The illustrations in this particular context reiterate the idea that Jing is only an adequate daughter if she is famous or accomplished.
