The authors in this article recognized that mobile phones are the most used digital and electronic devices which affect much of our day to day lives. Although the authors studied generation Z, which is older than the millennial generation, the survey is relevant since it is expected that this current generation uses mobile phones more than the past generations. The objective of this study was to assess mobile phone addiction and how it influences both their individual and social lives. The participants in the research were students from university who were aged between 18 and 23 years. The study concluded that addiction to smartphones is common among people of this generation. Secondly, the study established that this generation felt that mobile phones were an important part of their lives; hence they did not consider them as addiction.

The article highlights that compulsive and excessive dependence on technology is becoming addictive. The authors specifically investigated the use of smartphones with concerns that it might not be smart as many people think. Evidence on past research had already shown that IT addictive behaviors created serious problems for both people and organizations. Using grounded theory, the researchers conducted interviews and revealed that four smartphone user-profiles existed. It was further established that two of the identified profiles, the users showed addictive behaviors. However, the study was unable the level of addiction among those interviewed. This has hence led to challenges in defining, understanding and managing addictive behaviors among smartphone users and other IT technology. The study also identified three key impacts of addiction which include productivity, social life and well-being.

In this article, the authors recognized that advancement in technology in the current world had influenced communications between people. Social media which has been enabled by the availability of smartphones has become a preferred method of communication, especially among millennials. The researchers analyzed phubbing behavior among millennials who use social media which was associated with smartphone addiction. Individuals with this behavior are antisocial and don’t enjoy human interactions. The researchers used a library research method and revealed that phubbing behavior as a result of smartphones leads to short attention problems, depression and other mental illnesses among millennials. As a concern, the researchers suggested that guidance and counselling were necessary to help people have better behavior when using media, especially smartphones which have been misused by many people.

The authors in this article were concerned with the increase in mental health problems among children and young people due to the use of smartphones. Drawing from media concerns on the possibility of smartphone addiction, the authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis study with the aim of examining the prevalence of problematic smartphone usage and its connection to mental health problems.From the review, it was revealed that in every four children and young people, one of them was dealing with smartphone addiction. As a result, these individuals were prone to mental health problems than their peers who were not overusing smartphones. The researchers established that smartphone addiction was a fast-growing health concern in public, which needs more studies to be done. These studies would help in determining the distinction between harmful and helpful use of technology.

Modeling habitual and addictive smartphone behavior: The role of smartphone usage types, emotional intelligence, social stress, self-regulation, age, and gender. Researchers in this study investigated the role social and process oriented usage of smartphone, social stress and, emotional intelligence, age, self-regulation and gender play in creating both addictive and habitual smartphone usage behavior. The researchers carried out an online survey where 386 participants were involved. The study findings indicated that habitual use of smartphone contributes to smartphone addiction behavior. Also, individuals who specifically use their phones for social media purposes easily develop smartphone addiction. Social stress had a positive impact on smartphone addiction with the gender analysis showing that women are more prone to this problem than men. Finally, it was revealed that older have a low probability of developing smartphone addiction as compared to young people.
