My wakeup call came to be a therapist came when my parents suffered from a chronic disease, and we had to go through a lot of trouble to find them a competent occupational therapist. It took time before we could find them a reliable therapist, and during that time, we had to struggle to give the best care to my ailing parents. The ordeal helped me develop a great desire to take up a course that could enable me to influence society by helping the sick. Although a most unpleasant experience, the sight of my parents suffering due to lack of specialized care, helped instil my interest in becoming a therapist.
After graduating from the Chinese University Hong Kong, I have been doing my internship in Hong Kong rehabilitation society. The internship has given me a great chance to gain skills as a therapist. Spending time with the patients and helping them ease their pain has given me a lot of fulfilment in my life. The knowledge gained in my undergraduate degree has helped me during my internship, and I believe that an opportunity to further my studies through a master’s program can be helpful in my career as a therapist.
My passion to influence change in society has always been my driving force. My dream has been to establish strategies that promote good health in the community through healthy lifestyles and helping the chronically ill patients manage their pain. Currently, the number of chronic diseases has been increasing each day, and in the future, there could likely be a crisis due to lack of enough caregivers. People have also become so much tied in their jobs that they have neglected the sick. Patients have, therefore, been suffering from no one to offer them much needed help. It is for this reason that I believe that an opportunity to further to a masters in occupational therapy will help me an object for influencing change in caregiving in society.
