Philosophy of the role of technology in society

Technology is the process through which human beings do modify way of doing things in order to meet their needs and wants in the most efficient way. This is majorly through invention of tools, techniques and modification of current machines to enhance efficiency of their use. It basically the uses of scientific knowledge to improve the way things are done. All this is in the need to make things easier. Today, technologies runs in the veins of any society that perceives change as an inevitable fact and hence use it to develop.

One of the roles played by technology is the automation systems (Benefits of technology, 12) this has in turn greatly saved efforts used by human beings and time taken to complete tasks. This has helped reduce the amount of labor in the industrial process through the introduction of technology that speeds up processes hence assist in mass production to meet demands in the market. The rate at which food would be produced in the past has changed thanks to machine invention. Introduction of computers improved data storage that previously involved writing down everything that was risky in the event of fire or lose. They have led to the rise of software industry that is gaining pace in the modern world. Online education can now be achieved as there are online studies and library services for education purposes (Minke, 23).

It has brought distant places closer hence making the world a global village. This is through the invention of internet societies. It has enabled communication between different societies through internet communities such as face book and twitter that are commonly used around the world that has led to cultural exchange where people in one region begin to love and practice cultures of others.  If correctly used, it can be beneficial to societies at large. This has mainly happened in Africa where a lot of European culture has widely been adopted and can be seen being practiced in African society (Nelson, 9).

It has also enhanced knowledge exchange where people can be able to learn foreign language like German, French and Kiswahili among other languages around the globe. The culture shift took place in most countries that experienced industrialization (Nelson, 10) a clear example is during the agrarian era, where it was common to spot slaves owned by large land owners and was normal to own human beings as properties. Technology has led to current shift of population from the rural areas to urban areas in search of jobs in factories and business enterprises that are a product of technological advancement.

Inventions in the field of electronics have led to development that has changed the culture of storage. Currently the life of food products is increased with the aid of technology through use of machines and equipments. Food on the shelf of supermarkets do not go stale  as there are fridges and large refrigerators that can keep them fresh over a long time unlike in the tradition food storage ages (Beniger, 35).

Technology has brought much change in the entertainment and advertising industry. People are able to see and be entertained by what happens miles away in different continents. Internet advertisement has enabled create publicity in the easiest means as businesses and services are advertised and access to jobs and various sites is now possible (Beck, 35) Invent of machines in the health sector that are used to monitor a patients progress that was a risky and tiring job to do previously in the manual way. This has led to multitasking where a doctor can leave the machine to monitor as he attends to other patients hence efficiency in medical care. Use of mobile phones has led to improved communication where one can connect and communicate with anyone around the globe as compared to the past centuries where this could have taken a lot of to deliver a message (Basalla, 52).

In the transport sector, much change has taken place. The introduction of automobile technology has changed the culture of walking for long distance as one can currently use vehicles, planes and water vessels powered by engines to travel. Animals were the dependent means of transport in older days. The idea of four wheeled transport mode led to creation of cars thanks to technology, one can now travel kilometers away in a day hence easing time used. Transportation of heavy loads is now possible compared to the days when slaves had to bear the pain of carrying heavy loads over distances (Abbate, 18) the gaming industry has developed where there is introduction of computer games, game boys, play station and Xbox all for amusement and fun.

Technology is hence an idea whose time has come and must be by all means be embraced. The society thus has to count on technology that is continually evolving to be better, faster, convenient and effective to change the society. However the different societies must be cautious not to erode cultural values that are important and must upheld.  Proper use f technology will bring more positive achievements in the near future (Achterhuis, 34).
