In his article “What does it mean to say a school is doing well?”, Eisner has discussed rationalization approaches to education and how they affect standardized procedures, measurable results, and commensurability.
While looking more into the implications of rationalization, Eisner raised several questions on quantifiable results and whether it’s a good measurement of a teacher’s performance and whether it promotes the inquisitive nature in students and whether it gives students enough encouragement and guidance to make connections between what they have learnt in the classroom and its application in .
Among Eisner’s questions, I am going to discuss three of Eisner’s unanswered questions giving my standpoint views about the curriculum. The first question is, “are test scores the criteria that we want to use the reward professional performance?” From Eisner’s discussion on rationalization, he posits that too much testing shifts the aim of education to just producing desirable quantitative results of education. On the other hand, teachers are pressured to perform par to the school performance. Eisner posts that the consequence of using test scores to check for understanding is that students and teachers will learn to “cut corners” (Eisner, 2001).
Eisner’s statement resonates all over the teaching discourse whereby the school management pressures teachers, and in turn, they teach students how to beat the system and or pass the tests.
According to Shavelson et. al.,(2010), using test scores to judge teachers’ performances draws them away from and, in turn, leads to the rejection of students with weaker learning backgrounds who keep lagging behind in studies because their high-level needs are not met, and no possible improvement remedies are instituted to help them.
The other question I would like to answer, as raised by Eisner, is, “are students encouraged to wonder and to raise questions about what they could have studied?” the implications of narrowing the curriculum down to “core subjects” for measurable results is that education becomes but a means to an end that is supposed to be promoted in school. Students now learn to cram the content as highlighted in the introductory part of the objectives of a unit. The students’ aim is to achieve the desired grades to take them to the next level while still missing the context of the subject already learnt.
Lastly, Eisner also speaks about “individuality”. He explains that individuality is the price one pays for providing many ways for students to demonstrate what has been learnt. Munna & Kalam (2021) further illustrates that instructors need to align learning goals with classroom activities that create motivating and inclusive environments.
From his statement, there is a trade-off between rationalization and the level of intellectual disposition. From my experience, I can comfortably critique teaching only core subjects because learners are tied to two specific knowledge while missing a lot of information that is applicable in their daily lives. The teaching dwarfism inhibited in curriculums is making learners rigid. Students do not like critical thinking, nor do they develop personal responsibility traits. Eisner implies that schools should offer more chances for schools to explore multiple dynamics of a topic in order to get the context of a topic and not just content.
In conclusion, Eisner directs his questions to the ways to overcome the fear of bad grades but instead to understand the context of a topic. Students need to apply whatever they have learnt in class to a practical life experience outside the classrooms.
