Bible scholars have been able to reveal a structural similarity between Mark and Mathew’s accounts of the gospel (Muddiman and Barton, pp.56). These similarities show that Mathew Gospel accounts could have been copied from Mark’s gospel accounts. Several blocks of Mark’s gospel are found to be organized in Mathew’s version. These passages from Mark when included in Mathew are often edited, expanded upon, reduced in size and sometimes rearranged. The reason why Mathew is considered to have copied from Mark is that in some places Mathew closely follows the arrangement as brought out by the Physician writer. When the two books are looked upon hand in hand, Mathew’s account seems to leave out some issue showing what Mathew had in mind and for this reason, many scholars agree it could not be a coincidence. Mathew also makes use of polemic arrangements to suit his agenda. It is interesting how Mark’s gospel account appears scattered in Mathew’s gospel account in a manner that so many theologians describe as a tossed salad.
Mathew 14:25-27 when compared to Mark 6:45-52 clearly brings out Mathew’s style of writing and how he must have edited Mark’s work (The Catholic Study Bible). Mathew describes that in the fourth watch of the night Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified and they gave out a cry in fear. According to Mathew Jesus told them to take heart in verse 27 (The Catholic study Bible). Mark, on the other hand, begins the story with Jesus in Bethsaida. Jesus after sharing the word with the followers bade them cross the sea as he went to the mountain. These passages are not captured by Mathew and must have been deleted out when Mathew copied from Mark (Martin, pp. 107). In Mark, Jesus saw the disciples being tossed in the deep sea and went out walking on the sea to help the disciples. Though in both accounts the disciples were terrified and therefore cried out in fear and Jesus came to their help. In the same texts, according to Mathew the disciples worshiped saying that “Truly you are the son of God” but that does not appear in Mark suggesting that the Mathew must have added that up to tie up the story.
The next comparison of the two gospel accounts appears in Mark 9:2-10 and in Mathew 17:1-15. The two accounts tell the transfiguration of Jesus. According to Mark just like Mathew, Jesus took with Him Peter, James and John to a high mountain. The description of the transfiguration is rearranged in Mathew from Mark’s account. Mark begins by describing the changing of the garments into intense white. Mathew, on the other hand, describes the face shining as the sun before fixing the story of the garments shining as light. The words of Peter are also rearranged when the two scripts are compared. In Mathew, Peter asks the Lord so that he would make three tabernacles while in Mark Peter asks the Lord if they would make three tabernacles for Elijah, Moses, and Christ Himself. Many scholars agree that only the first two chapters of Mathew are original. The next Chapters 3 and 4 follow Mark. Chapter 5 to chapter 13 contains materials assorted from Mark’s account while from chapter 14 onwards again follow the gospel of Mark.
