I have made speeches on many occasions ranging from formal to informal. On several occasions, I have felt satisfied with my presentations, but the feedback from some quarters have suggested that I did not. Similarly, I have received not-so-good feedback in public speeches that I felt I had done my best. With this feedback, I have learned my strengths and weaknesses. As such, I have resorted to making my strengths better while working on my weak points.
One of the strengths I can point out is in the preparation of my speeches. Preparation, in anything, is critical to success. Thus, the speeches that I have made after keenly going through every aspect that I would be presenting has turned out to be a colossal accomplishment judging from the reaction of the audience. One time, I was presenting a speech on behalf of my team that had won an academic competition. I was chosen because my team thought I had the confidence and fluency to represent them. So, before the D-day, I did extensive research on the audience, including why they would be present, their demographics, and what their attitudes and beliefs were. Upon gathering the information about my audience, I delved into the details of the topic, which was majorly what we had done as a team that helped us to win as well as what other teams could do to ensure their success. On the D-day, my speech was so engaging that my audience kept clapping. Also one thing I noticed was that nobody dozed off, which is one sign of an engaging speech according to Zarefsky and MacLennan (2019). What I could say helped me a lot was the lack of debilitative communication apprehension. In essence, I had never had a previous negative experience that took away my confidence on stage. Thus, coupled with my confidence and ability to come up with engaging content, I managed to cheer up the crowd while not veering off the message in the speech. Even more importantly, I ensured that my attire matched the occasion, and my movement and body language were on point.
I also have some aspects of public speaking that I’d say require significant improvement. One of the most notable is perfectionism. According to Beebe and Beebe (2019), perfectionism is may be a strength in many circumstances but is also a weakness in others. As a weakness, perfectionism tends to eat up into my presentations time. Essentially, I tend to look too much into the details so that I do not leave anything behind. In the event, it takes up a lot of time and leaves me with little time to other critical aspects of the preparation. For instance, still when I was giving a speech after our team’s victory, perfectionism made me go take too much time researching on the topics I would talk about as well as my audience. Even though I had enough time to prepare, in terms of days, I exhausted those and even continued researching on the morning of the occasion. I had to rush to the stage without rehearsing my speech because there was no time. Thus, this is a weakness that I hope to overcome in my future presentations because it makes me feel like I am not prepared no matter the amount of time I have had for preparations.
