The bioecological model on human development

Urie Bronfenbrenner developed a model for explaining human development within a number of years. This model, known as the bioecological model, was integral in the development of preschool kindergarten programs. This theory attempts to explain the way the environment and children’s inherent qualities interact to impact their growth and development. It focusses on the study of children in various settings, also called ecological systems, to understand how they develop. This approach posits that children find themselves within multiple ecosystems, including their homes, the large school ecosystem, and the broader system the comprises the society. Bronfenbrenner’s model is different from the approach taken by Nelson’s sociocultural development theory. Nelson’s autobiographical memory approach is based on a new memory system that starts gradually in the preschool years as it develops based on self, memory, and language (Nelson & Fivush, 2004). This theoretical perspective differs from other autobiographical theories. The first difference is that it is only developmental and includes linguistic, cultural, and social processes as key in development. It is different from the bioecological approach. The latter does not emphasize the active role of individuals in their development. Moreover, it considers only the biological aspects of an individual to be vital. Nelson’s model considers the cultural and social factors in a child’s development. Both models share some similarities. For instance, they all recognize the impact of external influences on a child’s development. Also, the models emphasize the importance of surrounding in a child’s development process. Another key similarity in both approaches is the inclusion of society and culture. The approaches also acknowledge that events have implications on a child’s cognitive, cultural, social development in the succeeding years.
