‘The Hiding Place’
The title ‘The Hiding Place’ refers to Corrie’s family, which acted as a refuge to all the needy people. The kindness that Caper and his wife demonstrated to their children was boundless, and the result of their Christian upbringing is evident later in their adulthood. The children grew up learning the art of sharing and showing love to all people irrespective of their social class or even background. Built upon the foundations of Christian faith, Casper’s family acted as a source of hope for all the distressed individuals through offering them a home and consolation from all the problems making the Beje a hiding place for those troubled in life (Ten Boom, Sherrill E. & Sherrill J. 2006 p. 12). Corrie’s family became the hiding place for those facing economic hardships, sickness,orphanhood, and racial persecution.
Casper was always kind and welcoming to visitors both in his shop and even at home. He gladly shared his skills with the employees whom he treated like family. When Christoffels came to the shop seeking a job, he looked ragged, and few people would be willing to offer him a meal, let alone a job. Casper, however, asked his daughter Bestie to provide him with food, and he later employed him at the shop (16). Casper acted as a hiding place for those bruised by life and going through harsh economic times.
Bestie and Corrie grew up taking care of sick people in the house. It started with their aunts, mother, and finally jewslike Mary Itallie(80). At the time when the Nazis were killing the Jews, Mary Itallie had been rejected by other homes because of her whizzing asthmatic sound, which endangered both her hosts and fellow Jews. Casper’s house, however, was welcoming to all without considering that she increased chances of being arrested in the event of a raid because of her noisy whizzing and old age, which made her slow. Their compassion enabled them to see the plight of the old woman and risk their lives by offering her shelter.
When growing up, Corrie and her siblings had become used to homeless children who were left to live there until they were old enough to feed themselves and ready to move out. Orphaned children were always welcome at Casper’s house, where they were treated like family. The children also never complained about having to share a home with strangers. The house was the ideal place for the homeless and orphaned children to seek shelter.
When Jews were facing racial persecution, Casper and his family risked being arrested by offering shelter to them. Although hiding the Jews at their place was extremely dangerous, the family was willing to provide the poor people somewhere to hide. At the time, there were raids in people’s homes looking for Jews, and many people were unwilling to risk being arrested by hosting the Jews. The Beje once again acted as the best place for the jews to hide from the Nazis.
In conclusion, the book focuses on the trouble that the family went through to accommodate all kinds of needy people in the society. Although the family was not wealthy, they tried to ensure that they helped the poor, sick, homeless, and those facing persecution. The title ‘The Hiding Place’ refers to Casper’s family and the lengths they were willing to undergo to help out all those facing challenges in life.
