The book of Titus 1:9 argues in favor of Aristotle in that it claims that it is the work of the bishop or any other leader in the faith, “to give instructions in sound doctrine and also to confute those who contradict it.” Based on the quote, it is impossible to have the knowledge that the faith has been contradicted, and it is only through argument that contradicting faith can be refuted. However, it is impossible to make a good argument without reasoning. Therefore, a careful study of faith is necessary in order to make reasonable arguments in faith that are not contradictory.
The bible states that the Trinity is divided into God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. If faith is not investigated with reason, it would be difficult for a believer to know the relation between the three, as they sum up to one God. God promises to help us in the endeavors to provide reason for the very thing that they demand, and that is the Trinity, which is one God. If God promises his followers to guide them in knowing the truth, then there is no reason for staying in darkness. Finding the light as the bible states that a lighted candle should be placed on higher grounds to provide light to everyone, we should use the knowledge provided by God to learn about the Trinity and how we should relate to them as God promises guidance in our endeavors. Therefore we should not take his help through the Holy Spirit for granted as we can never know the truth on our own.
However, seeking the divine through reason should not be allowed as it puts the faith at risk. In matters of the divine, reason should not be put before faith as the main purpose of believing is to have faith. Using reason before faith may have negative consequences, such as reduced faith in the divine. Considering that God is too far from us, we should only believe in his existence and not question the divine. The bible from the book of Ecclesiasticus 3:22 warns us against seeking the divine, that is which is too high for us, it states, “Seek not what is too high for you, and search not into what is above your ability” Through this, the bible warns against using reason to investigate God, it is only God who is higher than the human beings and he is the one to be feared. God is above our ability, and this qualifies us not to investigate his existence. Divine things are related to God, and so is faith and thus are too high.
