The Soka Gakkai movement

The Soka Gakkai is a movement of the Japanese Buddhist religion. The group bases its teachings on the Priest’s teachings that are Nichiren, who was a priest in the 13^th century. This makes it the new Japanese Buddhist religion that claims to have the highest number of members and based on the individuals who follow in the Priest’s teachings. The teachings are based on Lotus Sutra’s interpretation through Nichiren teachings that were taught by the first three presidents of the group and have been followed by members throughout the years. The main idea behind the group is the promotion of peace and unity all across the globe and supports the education and culture of the Buddhist religion. The founders of the group were called Tsunesaburo, Makiguchi, and Josei Toda. They also were the first presidents of the Sokka Gakkai new Japanese Buddhist religious movement, and this was from the year of its formation in November 1930 (Gebert, 19).The group has over 12million members, and it has based its headquarters in Shinanomachi town in Shinjuku- Ku Tokyo province of Japan, and its current president is Minoru Harada. They have their flag as well, although the group was disbanded later on during World War 2 due to breaking and violation of peace laws, and led to the imprisonment of most of the leaders of the group.

The Sokka Gakkai is a movement that is set to support human life through the incorporation and implementation of human rights to attain a peaceful environment all around the globe. It is a religious NGO that follows in line with the SGI beliefs and culture that genuinely based on the preservation of human life and peaceful accord with each other. The members are intuitive in following the Nichiren teachings that have been taught all through starting with the three initial founders of the movement. In this case, the branch of the movement based in the United States based in California, and it has the same teachings as it does from Japan. The group believed to adhere to the belief that all individuals have the potential that is imminent from the Buddhist religion. They found that life has dignity, and it should be respected as well as peaceful correlation must be maintained to achieve this (Heiner, Prof, et al. 156). The publication of the Nichiren Daishonin Gosho Zenshu that was done in the year 1952 was the Nichiren writing that contains all the Nichiren scripts from the time of its foundation. The members today still follow the teachings and books from this publication called the Gosho. The members of the Soka Gakkai believe in the spiritual essence called the Nichiren’s Gohonzon.

In the Lotus Sutra, this is the essence that the members pray to. The primary teaching that they believe in and follow is that in all situations, the life of an individual possesses dignity when they are familiarized with the law of the Mystic(Metraux 65).The goal is to create awareness and give hope to the people who are going through tough times and struggles, leading them towards a path that could ascertain peace and happiness in their lives. The idea is to help these individuals free themselves from life struggles and ensuring they find their purpose that brings their joy. The SokaGakkai is a group of individuals with two significant visions that bring about the fulfillment of finding the dignity of one’s life. These visions include social perception as well as the religious idea. The social perception is to bring about peace all over the world and establish good social connections. At the same time, the theological vision was based on giving the essential information about the Soka Gakkai through actual teachings taught by the leaders of the movement. Achieving this was through the religious teachings about the Buddhist culture in relation to the Lotus Sutra that is the basic guideline to understanding the Soka Gakkai at length.

They also believe in Karma. In simple terms, Karma is the considerable force that is set to create the consequences of one’s actions either through thoughts or even words as well. This was some tool that was used by the Buddhist leaders to instill discipline through fear and regret in the situation of one having to do an action. The believers were and still are believers of this law of causality, where each and every person is responsible for their actions and should be aware of the consequences.

The SokaGakkaibelieve that this influence that is brought about by Karma can be reduced or instead avoided through the belief in the Nichiren Buddhist religion through the Lotus Sutra(Erica, 220).They believe that the negative force that is Karma does not affect the Buddhist way of life, but instead, this force that is considered to be harmful is purified into power in the Buddhahood. The members of the movement strongly understand the effects of Karma, and through the teachings of the Lotus Sutra, they believe that the results of Karma can only be determined through analysis of the causes of the negative force. They understand and teach that the most brutal of karmas can be overcome only when one identifies the true nature of themselves through Buddha.

As an organization, the Soka Gakkai is dedicated to the preservation of human life and the aid of the less fortunate in finding freedom from struggles. It offers spiritual as well as mental development in understanding their culture as well as to engage the society in their services.
