Pender’s Health Promotion Model

The nursing philosophy that I use in practice arises from Pender’s Health promotion model. Pender’s health promotion model. The model got developed by Nola Pender, who was a nurse with experience working and studying as well. The model stipulates that various motivating factors motivate people in life. The nurse, therefore, suggested that the motivators could get used in improving healthy behavior among patients. If patients are not motivated enough, it is hard for them to enact health behaviors that contribute to health. however, when there is enough motivation, the patients can sustain positive practices that promote health and well-being. The nurse has, therefore, to determine the patient’s characteristics and experiences in assessing their motivation. It is such aspects that affect the perceived benefits of health promotion activities and the outcome of the intervention. The reason why I chose the model is that it focuses on health promotion, which is an effective strategy in preventing illnesses among a population. The theory offers a framework through which nurses can use in creating lasting behavioral changes in patients and produce the desired output(Mansourizadeh, 2018). It is the responsibility of every nurse to engage in health promotion, and the model offers a solution to that.

Pender’s Health promotion model is essential in guiding nurses in critical thinking. The model guides the process of formulating health promotion plans for communities and patients as well. Different groups of people have different motivators, and assuming that one method can work for an entire population is incorrect. Pender’s model emphasizes the need to determine an individual’s personal experiences and backgrounds to help to deal with barriers to health promotion(Han, 2018). The model allows nurses to formulate effective health promotion interventions in schools, communities, individual groups, families, and nursing centers, among other care settings. The model is useful in predicting specific health behaviors among populations. The theory guides the nurses in using nursing behavioral sciences approaches to care. It borrows from other disciplines in psychology to better the health of patients. The nurses have to, therefore, understand behaviors, environments, cognitive functioning, and how to apply it in the care plan. The model thus increases the thinking, reasoning, and creativity of nurses as they have to provide holistic care that is sustainable. The nurse is, therefore, in a position to predict whether a specific intervention is effective in promoting health to a particular patient, group, or community.

Nursing Concepts

There are four primary nursing concepts including person, health, nursing, and environment. The concepts offer a basis for the many educational programs and training of students. The concept of nursing to me goes beyond professional clinical expertise. Nursing is an art that the nurse uses in caring for the patients, in decision making, critical thinking, and formulating a plan of care. Nursing is a process of teaching and learning where the nurses meet the needs of the patients holistically and not just dealing with the symptoms. Nursing involves promoting the patient’s well-being, preventing diseases, assisting in the healing process, and easing suffering(Mansourizadeh, 2018).

The concept of a person or human being refers to the recipient of care who is the patient. Various things make up an individual, including their spiritual beliefs, biological makeup, their cultural background, their cognitive abilities, social life, physical needs, and their medical history(Han, 2018). It is thus crucial for nurses not only to focus on the patient’s symptoms but the patients as a whole. In doing so, the patients receive holistic care that is sustainable rather than receiving treatments for symptoms and not underlying conditions.

The next concept is the environment, which consists of both the external and the internal. The external environment is that which surrounds the patients, such as room conditions, noise, fresh air, and clean beddings. It also refers to the context in which the patients’ lives may affect their health. The nurse has to ensure that the patients do not go back to the same environment that led to the disease through patient education. Without removing environmental barriers to good health, patients will get sick again and come back to the hospital. The other aspect of the environment is the internal environment. The internal environment refers to the patients’ mental and psychological well-being. The nurse has to ensure that both the internal and external climates are excellent to maximize outcomes(Mansourizadeh, 2018). Some of the internal problems include perceptions, the definition of health, myths, stress, anxiety, and lack of information. The nurse should make sure that the patient is comfortable and address their psychological well-being, as well.

Health is the last concept that refers to the overall well being of the patient. Patients may have different definitions of health, and it is upon the nurse to determine them and address them. When nurses don’t do that, the patients’ outcomes become negative as patients’ needs don’t get met. There are primary concerns of the patient and secondary. Knowing the difference helps the nurses to be on the lookout and address all patients’ needs. Some of the symptoms patients exhibits are always a sign of an underlying issue. Patient assessments allow the nurse to determine the needs of the patient. Some of the requirements might be psychological, physical, emotional, spiritual, and cultural(Han, 2018). Part of evidence-based care is incorporating patients’ values in care, and that is critical in providing care that meets the patients’ needs.

Beliefs and Values

The value that I treasure most in my practice is that of caring. Caring refers to the ability to embody the professional expertise alongside the patient’sneeds. Clinical expertise is not always all that a patient need. My role is to determine the patients’ needs and go beyond my professional obligation to meet their other requirements, such as emotional and support. Empathy creates a connection between the nurse and the patients that improve communication, trust, and openness, which is crucial in care provision(Stavropoulou, Rovithis, Sigala, Pantou&Koukouli, 2020). The other significant value is professionalism. Professionalism is a value system that helps me to create beneficial boundaries that prioritize care. The value helps me maintain professional standards and improve care. The value helps in promoting healthy relationships that enhance the patient’s outcomes. The patients feel safe, and I feel safe as well when we respect each other and focus on care.

Beliefs are important as they guide to action, thought, and decision making. One belief I have is that patients are always right. The view has been helping me become open-minded and listen to the patients more rather than impose my idea of health on them. Listening to patients and respecting their wishes help sin offering culturally congruent care that respects diversity(Stavropoulou, Rovithis, Sigala, Pantou&Koukouli, 2020). The belief is critical as I can incorporate patient’s views and contributions to their care, which increases patient satisfaction and promotes positive patient outcomes. The other idea is that patients come first. The belief helps me to put the needs of the patient first before my own. I can provide the best care possible to the patients using the available resources and in good time. The aspect is helping in improving patient outcomes and my work satisfaction because I am growing.

Communication Style

The communication style that I use most of the time is aggressive. My personality is that which allows me to be bold, confident, and courageous. The communication style will enable people to hear me, toe listen, and to see what I am talking about because I’m direct in my speech. Most times, I like maintaining eye contact when speaking because it helps in analyzing whether I have passed the message(Sollitto& Cranmer, 2015). It also helps me know whether I’m connecting with someone or not. The other characteristic of my communication style is that I’m loud. I find that being loud helps in getting people’s attention and showing that what I’m saying is serious.

The advantages of the aggressive communication style are that it makes me a natural leader. The loud, assertive, and confident voice always gets me into leadership positions. Moreover, when I speak, people do listen and take what I say very seriously as opposed to being passive. The aggressiveness also inspires confidence in people. People readily believe what I say and take my word for it, and so people obey my directions quickly. It is most effective when dealing with stubborn patients because it helps keep them in check and to follow the instructions(Sollitto& Cranmer, 2015).

The disadvantages of the communication style are that it may come out too intense for some people, especially patients. It may be intimidating to self-conscious, other people. The other disadvantage is that it may look like a lack of respect, mainly when directed to people who are strangers(Sollitto& Cranmer, 2015). Patients sometimes may feel like I do not respect them because I’m too aggressive. It may also communicate that my needs and objectives are far more critical than those of others, even if they are not. People sometimes end up fearing me rather than respect, and that affects the nurse-patient relationship. It takes longer to recover such a relationship that gets based on fear rather than authenticity. I’m learning tow work o my communication by being less aggressive but passive. I’m learning to be gentle, kind, and choose my words well because they have an impact on patient care.


In summary, a nursing philosophy guides everything that a nurse does and their decision making. Pender’s health promotion model helps in improving the well being of patients through disease prevention, patient education, and health promotion. The nurse can use behavioral science to help the patients adopt health-promoting activities that improve their well-being. The model helps in treating patients wholly through lifestyle changes rather than treating the symptom and leaving the hazard. The theory guides the value system, beliefs, and, consequently, the communication style
