It was not until 1950 that the Chinese and Soviet governments recognized the communist elements inVietnam that they started supporting the cause both in finance and military (Klusmeyer 69). The Viet Minh were now strong enough to invade the French outposts in Vietnam. Ideally, this was when the United States felt threats by the communist Viet Minh, and they decided on giving France the support it needs to maintain order in Vietnam.
It could be argued that the most significant decision the United States made during the VietnamWar was in 1954. It was in this year that theViet Minh defeated the French forces, and they lost their power in Vietnam. President Dwight of the United States stated that the French’s defeat would have a negative impact on the whole of southern Asia. This led to the formation of the postulates to the domino theory that guided their tactics in Vietnam. After Vietnam was divided into north and south, theUnited States supported a leader for the southern part. The leader of communist North Vietnam launched guerrilla attacks on the south part, and even in 1959, the first United States soldiers were killed in one of these attacks (Wagner 171). In 1960, the national liberation front was formed, and the united states conclude it is just a part of the northern Vietnam communists. The military elements of the national liberation front were then called the Viet Cong.
In the following year, the United States President Kennedy sent military support to the south of Vietnam to fight the Viet Cong. The supportincluded a number of helicopters, berets and help in carrying out military operations. In 1962, the United States started spraying herbicides in the forests of Vietnam to kill the vegetation that guerilla forces used for food and hiding. Nonetheless, the South Vietnamese were defeated, and the United States started withdrawing troops. In 1963 before President Kennedy is assassinated, the United States aided the killing of the communist leaders. President Johnson sent the largest amount of soldiers and organized airstrikes all over Vietnam in the following year. On the other hand, the Soviet Union supported the communist parties through their military support. 1965 had the largest military impacts with some of the largest battles, like the battle of la Drang Valley. Throughout 1965 to 1966, President Johnson sent more and more troops into Vietnam until the number of American soldiers in Vietnam went over half a million.
